Cathodic Protection Services
What is it?
Cathodic protection (CP) is a widely used technology, utilized among corrosion engineers to achieve corrosion protection. In other words, cathodic protection prevents metals and other materials that are often used in common industries like power and energy, as well as other industries, from corroding and failing. Cathodic protection services include galvanic anode cathodic protection (GACP) and impressed current CP, also known as ICCP.
Galvanic Anode Cathodic Protection (GACP)
Galvanic anode cathodic protection provides corrosion control using galvanic anode alloys. It achieves this with the help of electrical properties. Galvanic cathodic protection is executed by anodes (positively charged electrodes) connecting to a circuit or more positively charged power source. Galvanic anode cathodic protection does an excellent job at protecting materials such as underground steel pipes and other similar metallic structures. Sacrificial (galvanic) anodes such as magnesium and zinc alloy anodes are known to offer a simple, user-friendly operation.
Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP)
Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) is a longer-term solution compared to galvanic protection. It works by utilizing external power sources (AC power) to drive currents using an AC/DC transformer. Typically, most cathodic protection engineers will first take advantage of galvanic protection as it is a shorter-term, more straightforward solution. However, impressed current protection does have its benefits. For one, impressed current offers greater functionality, higher voltages and appled protective current (I), and less limitations when it comes to the protective current generation. ICCP system utilizes an AC/DC transformer called cathodic protection (CP) rectifier, which has an AC power input and a DC power output. The DC current is then sent to impressed current anodes such as high-silicon cast iron, graphite, platinized niobium, and other exotic impressed current anodes. ICCP systems can provide high amounts of DC current when the pipes, tanks, or other protected equipment are large and have a high, protective DC current demand.
Why is it useful?
Cathodic protection systems are one of the most effective ways to prevent corrosion in a variety of structures. Cathodic protection is achieved when a cathode (conventional current electrode) is manipulated as an electrochemical cell. Many industries use methods of cathodic protection services to avoid corrosion and allow the protected equipment to last much longer.
